Salvatore

My name is Salvatore (Sal) and I've been created with over 15 species of reclaimed wood. I am presently completing my outdoor “Weathering” period, having been lovingly hand-coated with a blend of natural oils. This process and time has made me essentially waterproof and impervious to bugs and rot, as I wish to live until the end of time, if at all possible, and to say nothing of my wonderful tone & complexion.

Crafted by Giles Runeckles, Artist, Designer & Maker at ZOOHAUS, I am suited for both indoor or outdoor living. I have the ability to stand alone or hang on a great wall with a French cleat.

Materials & Specification

In keeping with my R3 Initiative, the use of any environmentally sensitive material was kept to a minimum if used at all. The lumber was sourced end-cuts from ZOOHAUS studio work, commercial waste programs and 3rd party contractor participation. A blend of all natural oils including, Tung, Linseed & Teak were used to treat and seal me, and then given a final, hand-applied, natural wax finish.

I stand 90" high when attached with floor brackets (98" with base plynth). Alternatively, I can have the support brackets removed making me ideal for a grand installation on a larger flat wall surface area. The depth from the back to the tip of my nose measures 22" and the greatest width measures 44". And although I look heavy, I'm surprisingly light, at approximately 112LBS.

Jules

I'm Jules the younger, more rebelious cousin of Salvatore. Crafted with 10 species of reclaimed wood, my “Weathering” period outdoors is complete and I must say it's been a blast, literally!

I too was envisioned and created by Giles Runeckles, and I enjoy both indoor and outdoor living, although I really see myself either on a wall or standing indoors, enjoying the view from an expansive window setting.

Being the slightly shorter and stockier cousin, I stand 85" high when attached with floor brackets (92" with base plynth). Alternatively, I can have the support brackets removed making me ideal for a grand installation on a larger flat wall surface area. The depth to my nose measures 26" and my face being rounder measures 50". And as my cousin Salvatore, I too watch my diet and only weigh approximately 120LBS on a good day.

For information about either of us or both sharing and accentuating your space, whether its home, office, lobby or garden, or for commissions, sales or rental installations, contact Giles directly with the email form below. I can guarantee you that I'm fun to be around, and that I enjoy solitude and quiet times but also any lively gathering, and we're both incredibly photogenic!

Footnote: We're thrilled that Giles has kindly undertaken the crafting of two additional HEADS sculptures (friends of ours), Olivia (Oly) and Arturo (Teddy) who will be joining us fall/winter 2024.

R3 Initiative

The Initiative

The initiative encapsulates the practice where materials and objects are reclaimed, reimagined and reborn. Recycling, upcycling and repurposing has been in my studio DNA from the beginning, and has never compromised nor lessened the quality or successful outcome of any project. New materials and technologies are used when called for and always work symbiotically and sympathetically with reclaimed material. This emphasis has often revealed unexpected outcomes and at times presented entirely new and exciting avenues of exploration.

Materials

Effectively there are no materials limitations, although in keeping with the R3 spirit, the use of any environmentally sensitive materials is kept to a minimum if used at all.
